Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior, is trying to put an end to corruption and the squandering of public funds. In his sights, some thirty municipal presidents and elected officials whose files he has transferred to the kingdom’s judicial agent.
Abdelouafi Laftit is determined to make life difficult for municipal elected officials. He referred the cases of 30 municipal presidents and elected officials suspected of various violations to the judicial agent of the kingdom and “threatened to pursue the perpetrators of squandering of public money among the council presidents, who began in all haste to plan to benefit from “rent” and corruption in elected assemblies,” reports Assaba. Informed of the actions of certain regional and elected assembly presidents in several cities, the minister “swore that he would spare no one,” sources report. In this sense, it intends to boost the role of the General Inspectorate of Territorial Administration after the appointment of an inspector general, within the framework of the designations provided for in the ranks of major officials of the ministry, so that the courts responsible for crimes financial institutions continue the judgment of dishonest municipal presidents, some of whom will be judged retroactively.

The presidents of other municipalities could also be prosecuted for squandering public funds after the sentencing of several elected officials to prison sentences by the administrative courts in Rabat, Marrakech, Fez and Casablanca. It is not excluded that Laftit’s department will rely on interventions by parliamentarians in the commission of the Ministry of the Interior and local authorities by referring the cases of certain presidents, former and current, to the financial crimes courts. . The kingdom’s judicial agent has already referred to the courts responsible for financial crimes a list of 15 municipal presidents suspected of corruption in different regions of the country.

It was not just the condemnation of commune presidents. There is also the arrest of directors of design offices and companies who are accused of having cornered all the markets with the blessing of influential figures in the general management of local authorities.
