Charles III and his slew of regalia: new official portrait from Windsor

Unlike the colorful portrait of Jonathan Yeo revealed last May, this new representation of Charles III is intended to be much more traditional. This Saturday, June 29, the Palace unveiled a new portrait of the sovereign on the occasion of Armed Forces Day. Since he is commander-in-chief, King Charles poses in uniform, with his many decorations.

This new photo was taken by Hugo Burnand in November 2023, in Windsor Castle. Charles III therefore appears in a military frock coat with all his medals and distinctions, sword in hand. Already at the beginning of June, while taking part in the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, with great emotion, the king had highlighted his many military decorations.

Queen Camilla also marked Armed Forces Day by sending them a video message: “In times of war and in times of peace, visible or invisible, our armed forces support and strengthen our nation. You are a source of inspiration , comfort and pride – and I salute you all,” she said in a clip released Friday by the Palace. A speech for which she brought out her skull badge from the Royal Lancers regiment, to which her father belonged, and of which she has been the colonel-in-chief since 2023.

Charles III: the very daring gesture of Queen Camilla which did not go unnoticed

“Earlier this month, my husband and I were in Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. We recalled the incredible bravery of the Allied land, sea and air forces, whose combined efforts enabled the liberation of Western Europe and in which debt we will be forever,” added Camilla.

Charles III on all fronts, despite illness

It’s been a busy few weeks for the royal couple, who have had a host of engagements and celebrations: after the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Charles and Camilla were surrounded by the royal family – including Kate Middleton – for the traditional Trooping The Colour parade in London on June 15. The sovereign and his wife then took part in Royal Ascot, before welcoming Emperor Naruhito of Japan and Empress Masako for a three-day official visit.

So many commitments that Charles III kept with a smile and energy, he who was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the year. Cancer for which he continues to follow treatment, in private, just like his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton.
