Sanders and Findlay shine in the rain at Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant triathlon

On a rainy day, Mont-Tremblant hosted the Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant triathlon, ninth stage of the IRONMAN Pro Series™. This June 23, 2024, Canadian athletes Lionel Sanders and Paula Findlay dominated the competition, each achieving their second IRONMAN Pro Series victory of the year.

In this race, participants had to swim 1.9 km, cycle 90 km and run 21.1 km (a half marathon). The maximum time to complete these events is 8.5 hours. This year, due to adverse weather conditions and wind, the swim was shortened to 0.727 miles (1,170 meters).
More than 79 of the world’s best professional triathletes competed in the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Mont-Tremblant Triathlon to win a share of the US$50,000 total prize pool and IRONMAN Pro Series points, as well as three spots for men and three spots for women for the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand on December 14-15.

IRONMAN Pro Series Ranking
The IRONMAN Pro Series® is a global triathlon series where professionals accumulate points over 20 races in 19 cities. The new way the race works works on the idea that “every second counts®”, since each second behind the winner of the race is equivalent to a point lost or gained. This series of events is open to approximately 1,000 eligible professional triathletes from around the world.

The race
Despite the shorter swim, the competition featured some memorable performances. Lionel Sanders won his sixth Mont-Tremblant race (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024) with a time of 3:35:11. Paula Findlay dominated the women’s race, finishing in 4:01:00. American triathlete Ben Kanute took second place in the men’s race, followed by Matthew Marquardt. In the women’s race, Tamara Jewett took second place, followed by Ellie Salthouse.
Lionel Sanders, despite his recent return to competition following a rib injury, took control of the race early in the run:
“I tried to do the best I could in those conditions,” Sanders said at the finish line. “I had a pretty good swim and then I worked really hard on the bike. It was a real pleasure to ride with those guys. Everyone rode well and after the bike it was pretty much survival on the run. I started to get really sore around 13km and I just hung on for dear life.”
“I felt good today, so I think Friday’s effort helped me for today,” Findlay said. “I’m proud of myself because I felt good, kept a cool head and managed to do what I had to do. »
