BRANDSTADT, Gordon William – The Brandstadt family is very sad to report the death of Gordon at the age of 83. Oldest son of the late William Edward and Gertrude Florence, and a longtime resident of both Ottawa and the Isabella-Street residence in Pembroke, Gordon was known for being friendly, quiet, knowledgeable [he was a reader!] and helpful to a wide-circle of friends, and to all people who sought his aid. He was a decades-long librarian, working in public libraries of Central Ontario, and finally returning to the Pembroke branch. He grew up in Zion Lutheran Church, and returned to that fold in his final years. He had a life-long & useful role as a musician, able to play several instruments (accordion singalongs), and substituting on the church organ in 3 venues locally. He was very adept as a choir-ensemble member (bass), in the English, French, and German languages. He had a notable art-collection. He was also a diabetic, who lived a very long & fruitful life dealing with its effects as a vegan; but had a much troubled struggle with its effects in his elder years, which eventually caused his death by misadventure. Gordon was predeceased by his brother Alan. He will be dearly missed by his brother Gary, a resident of Victoria, BC; his sister-in-law Millie, and nieces Heidi (husband Lee and son Nathaniel), and Katrina (husband Sita, children Naye and Mayika); neighbour Kevin Doelle; cousins Elaine Wassermann, Mary Ellen Chater, and Janet, and Sister Esther Brose, all part of an active penpal relationship. He wrote remarkable 12-page letters of the goings-on behind the lacey curtains and under the snowy blanket covering Pembroke. Respecting Gordon’s wishes, cremation has taken place. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Pembroke Public Library Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Neville Funeral Home, 491 Isabella St., Pembroke.
