Belgian Athletics Championships – Fight for national titles offers last chance for Olympic qualification

The best Belgian athletes can be divided into three categories: those who have already qualified for Paris; those who are not officially qualified, but who can practically pack their bags thanks to their Olympic ranking; and those who must achieve a big performance at the National. In this last category, we find eleven athletes: Imke Vervaet (200m), Helena Ponette (400m), Lisa Rooms (5,000m), Paulien Couckuyt (400m hurdles), Merel Maes (high jump), Vanessa Sterckendries (hammer), Dylan Borlée (400m), Robin Hendrix (5,000m), Elie Bacari (110m hurdles), Philip Milanov (discus) and Timothy Herman (javelin). The Belgian championships will be particularly tense for them.

Noor Vidts, already assured of a place in Paris in the heptathlon, is coming to Brussels to test herself in the 100m hurdles and the shot put. Her heptathlon colleague Nafi Thiam is skipping the National, as is Alexander Doom in the 400 metres. In addition to the big favourite Dylan Borlée, his brothers Kevin and Jonathan will also be present in a last attempt to snatch a selection in the 4x400m. The Belgian Tornados Robin Vanderbemden, Florent Mabille and Christian Iguacel will also be there. Jonathan Sacoor has chosen the 200m. In the women’s race, the 400m will feature a duel between Helena Ponette and Camille Laus.

In the 100m, it will be a question of seeing if Simon Verherstraeten can repeat his 10.10 from last week. An international-level duel is expected in the 110m hurdles between Michael Obasuyi and Elie Bacari. Naomi Van Den Broeck will be a dangerous outsider in the 400m hurdles against Hanne Claes and Paulien Couckuyt. Ben Broeders will come to test his Olympic form in the pole vault.
