A oil pollution is underway this Thursday, November 21 in the watercourse of Bevinco (Haute-Corse). It originated in the leak from a tank located in Murato and containing 2,000 liters of fuel oil. Equipment that is around fifty years old. “We had just had the tank filled to supply the heating of the schools and certain apartments, indicates Claude Flori, the mayor of the town. And we were alerted by a strong smell yesterday [mercredi 20 novembre, ndlr]. We have since found the leak and alerted all relevant authorities. Our services are still at work, we will empty what remains in the tank with the help of a specialized company.”

At midday this Thursday, November 21, the quantity spilled into the municipality's pipe network is estimated at several hundred liters of fuel oil. These then passed through the Murato wastewater treatment plant to finish their journey in the Bevinco watercourse.

Health risks “would be minimal”

According to our information, given the volume spilled, the health risks would be “minimal” in the drinking water network of the urban community. Checks are currently being carried out.

Another element to take into account is the environmental risk: that of possible pollution of the Biguglia pond nature reserve. Here again, the mayor of the town claims to have alerted the competent authorities.

As for the Haute-Corse prefecture, it is indicated that a dam system is being installed by the competent services.

For the moment, the Regional Health Agency has not communicated on the facts.

More information to come.
