(Keystone-ATS) The Federal Festival of Traditional Costumes 2024 opened on Friday at Zurich Main Station. Until Sunday, 100,000 visitors from all over Switzerland are expected for the occasion on the banks of the Limmat.

To officially open the event in the main hall of the station, the Zurich city brass band played the legendary “Sechseläuten March”. An inaugural procession followed on Bahnhofstrasse and in the old town. Twenty-six couples in traditional costumes represented the Swiss cantons.

Music and traditions will set the pace for the Zurich weekend. The event includes five festival sites in the city centre and seven open-air stages, where cultural exchange will play a central role. Curious visitors will also be able to learn how to throw the flag or the “Chlefele”, the sonorous handling of a double wooden piece in one hand.

After 1939 and 1974, Zurich is hosting the Federal Festival of Traditional Costumes for the third time. The highlight of the event will be a grand procession on Sunday. The budget for the festival is 4.5 million francs.
