The majority of flights departing from Calvi, Bastia and Figari were canceled on Wednesday, the port of Bastia (Haute-Corse) closed and 3,500 homes deprived of electricity in the face of violent winds which led Météo-France to place the island on orange alert.
This alert, initially scheduled until 8:00 p.m., has been extended.until 11:00 p.m. at the earliest“, Météo-France indicated on Wednesday afternoon.
At 6:00 p.m., 3,500 customers were without electricity in different places on the Isle of Beauty, from Corte (center) to Bastia, Ghisonaccia (east) or Ajaccio, indicates EDF Corse sur X.
“The wind is strengthening and making complete replenishment impossible this evening“, specifies the electricity supplier who communicates the number 09 72 67 50 20 in the event of a downed electrical wire.
At Bastia-Poretta airport, a dozen departing and arriving flights were canceled from late morning.
In Calvi (Haute-Corse), flights to Marseille, Nice and Paris and those from Marseille and Paris were also canceled. Only the flight from Nice arrived at 5:00 p.m., indicates the airport.
In Figari (South Corsica), all eight flights of the day were canceled.
“Due to unfavorable weather conditions, all stops on Wednesday are canceled“, indicated the port of Bastia on its Facebook page.
The shipping company Corsica Linea therefore specifies that the Bastia–Marseille crossing, scheduled for Wednesday, is replaced by an Ajaccio-Marseille crossing and that the times of some crossings are modified on Wednesday and Thursday.
The westerly wind should gradually calm down in the evening, Météo-France detailed.
School transport and intercity transport services operated by the Corsican Community (CDC) were not provided.
The two prefectures of Corsica invite people to limit travel and speed on the roads, not to walk in the forest or on the coast and to be vigilant, in town, in the face of possible falling objects.
In Corsica-du-Sud, the prefecture adds that this episode of violent winds “induces a high risk of fire“, announcing the ban on the use of fire from Tuesday to Friday inclusive.
