The weather models are now almost unanimous: it will snow in this Thursday, November 21. As the Caetano depression passes through, which will cross the country from west to east, snow showers are forecast throughout the day.

“This depression is located at the interface of a major air mass conflict,” indicates Météo . “We therefore expect snowfall (sometimes sustained) at low altitude in the cold air located to the north of the depression.” This will mainly concern the north-eastern part of the region. Faced with the emerging scenario, the meteorological institute has placed the department of Ille-et-Vilaine on orange snow-ice vigilance from 6 a.m. Thursday morning until Friday.

Where will it snow in Ille-et-Vilaine?

If the south of the department should not see the slightest flake, snow will be present in the northern part. “The depression will be positioned over the basin in the morning,” indicates Sébastien Decaux, forecaster at Météo Bretagne. “We should have a little snow in Rennes even if it probably won't stick to the ground. On the other hand, there is a risk of whitening on the outskirts with 2 to 5 cm on the ground. With the possible exception of the Saint-Malo coast, the north of the department will be strongly affected with up to 10 cm in the Fougères region – where temperatures will be lower.

The first snowflakes should fall on the department between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. this Thursday. “We risk waking up with a little rain which will be replaced by snow due to the intrusion of a mass of cold air at altitude,” explains Sébastien Decaux. “It could last a good part of the morning before giving way to a short lull early in the afternoon. A shift of cold air should then bring a return of snow around 3/4 p.m. In the evening, showers could continue to fall behind the disturbance.

“It’s going to be chaos in certain sectors on the roads,” worries Sébastien Decaux. Agents from the Ille-et-Vilaine Department are already on alert to intervene on the road network. In a communication, the prefect of Ille-et-Vilaine called on the entire population to exercise “the greatest caution on the roads” and to “limit travel as much as possible, particularly in the evening and at night” .

If this snowy episode is surprising, it is also because of its early onset in the season. In Ille-et-Vilaine, you have to go back to 2010 to find any trace of significant snowfall during the month of November.
