On Friday September 13, 2024, following their immediate appearance, two cousins ​​from Vendée requested time to prepare their defense. One is 19 years old and his record is clean, the other, 25 years old, has two convictions for traffic offenses. The Saint-Nazaire criminal court opted for the pre-trial detention while awaiting their judgment.

They therefore found themselves in the box of the same court, on Friday November 15, 2024, supported by around thirty members of their families, many of them young people.

On the twenty victims recorded, two women were present and a lawyer represented a complainant.

Betrayed by their clothes and video surveillance

The theft of numerous vehicles, and coin changers from washing stations, with the same operating mode, between April and August 2024 (mainly Peugeot 207s, Citroën C4s and a Berlingo) from farms, or on public roads, has raised alarms the gendarmerie, which set up a close supervision.

Spotted at the Machecoul washing station, the thieves were betrayed by their clothing and video surveillance.

His cousin's phone was probably turned off at the time of their actions, knowing “that he was bordering a little before or a little later in the same areas”.

The first recognized eighteen factsand having burned most of the vehicles. The second, “nine only”. He clarified: “I’m an insomniac, I was traveling all night.”

This father of a four-year-old girl added that he was not doing well, due to a romantic breakup.

Noting 25 incidents of theft or destruction, the president questioned the youngest about his intentions. “It was for fun,” he replied.

If the oldest said, at the start of the hearing, that they had “acted separately”, a little later, they declared that they were still together.

The victims explained the setbacks that result from a loss of vehicle and the prosecutor followed suit.

The magistrate insisted: “What would have happened if they had not been arrested? »

A husband found himself without a car to drive his seriously ill wife to the hospital… He is not there, his wife died three days ago.

Me Nawel Durand-Kasmi pleaded for a partial acquittal for the elder and an adapted sentence for the recognized facts.

His colleague, Me Lauric Douvisi-Morrisspecifying, as on September 13, that a job awaits him, implored: “My client has served two months and two days of detention, that is enough”.

The public prosecutor requested three years (however requesting an acquittal for certain insufficiently characterized facts), including two with probationary suspension.

The court pronounced two years instead of three. The cousins ​​remain in detention.

They will have to compensate the victims whose civil interests will be debated on March 20, 2025.
