After the failure, at the end of October, of a previous similar attempt from the ranks of the National Rally (RN) – and which the left did not support – the LFI group in turn presented a bill for “repeal retirement at age 64. Some 71% of French people are in favor of this repeal, according to a Toluna/Harris Interactive survey carried out for LFI and published on Tuesday.
The text should be approved by all left-wing forces, but also by the RN: “We will vote for it,” MP Thomas Ménage assured Tuesday.
Repeal the Touraine reform
The proposal, which will be examined in the hemicycle on November 28, as part of the LFI parliamentary niche, reduces the retirement age from 64 to 62 years, as before the reform adopted in March 2023 under the government of 'Elisabeth Borne.
But it also proposes to reduce from 43 to 42 years the contribution period necessary to retire, which amounts to repealing the reform carried out in 2013 by the socialist minister Marisol Touraine during the five-year term of François Hollande.
Repealing the Touraine reform “is not a request shared by all trade union organizations”, according to PS deputy Arthur Delaporte. But this will not be a “blocking point” for the socialist deputies, who should therefore vote on the text to concentrate on the “essential”, the Borne reform, he insisted.
What position for the majority?
The Touraine reform could nevertheless be preserved, via an amendment to this effect tabled by the Liot group. If it is adopted, “we will vote on the text,” said centrist Charles de Courson.
The left claims to be able to carry this repeal proposal through to the end: it has already planned to include it on the Senate agenda on January 23, on the occasion of a communist niche, then in second reading in the Assembly on February 6, this time in a slot dedicated to environmentalists.
