Two days after its creation, the Solidarité pour Kanaky 68 collective is organizing, Thursday June 27 and Friday June 28, a rally in front of the Lutterbach penitentiary center, a commune bordering Mulhouse. Appointments are given at 5 p.m. Thursday June 27, and at 3 p.m. the next day.

The members of the collective demand the release of Christian Tein, head of the Field Action Coordination Cell (CCAT), an independent organization in Kanaky (the name given by the separatists to New Caledonia, Editor’s note). His incarceration, as well as that of seven other Kanaks in mainland France, follows the investigation launched after the revolts on the Pacific island in May. These violent clashes between the police, self-defense militias and Kanak independence activists left nine dead and hundreds injured. These riots followed the vote for the electoral thaw in New Caledonia, which expands the possibility of voting for all citizens residing on the island for more than ten years.

Representative of the Solidarité collective for Kanaky 68, Stéphane Wachoima, himself a Kanak, immediately mobilized when he heard the news of the incarceration of Christian Tein in Lutterbach: “We created the collective in the wake of Monday’s rally. Our objective is to make ourselves heard and to come together with other Kanak collectives in order to organize demonstrations throughout Alsace. » Today, Solidarity for Kanaky 68 has around thirty members.

A demonstration in Mulhouse on Saturday

The collective is organizing its first event in the center of Mulhouse on Saturday June 29 at 10 a.m., Place de la Liberté. La France insoumise 68, the National Confederation of Labor (CNT), the Kanak Movement in France (MKF) and the Kanaky solidarity coordination cell (CCSK) will be present in the procession. The organizers are demanding the release of the seven members of the CCAT imprisoned in metropolitan France as well as the cancellation of the “electoral thaw”, suspended by Emmanuel Macron on June 12. “We will also pay tribute to the martyrs killed by the militias in Kanaky during the month of May”says Stéphane Wachoima.
