They are no longer on the La Hague site (Manche) and, soon, “there will be no more German nuclear waste in France”, comments Orano.
The four “Castors” containers of German nuclear waste have left the Orano La Hague site. Conveyed by truck and surrounded by heavy security, they were transported to the Armanville railway terminal, near Valognes.
On the way to Germany
From now on, the four containers will be soon to be transported by train to Germanyin Phillipsburg. A trip that should last at least 3 p.m..
The organization of the convoy was organized “in collaboration with the two countries”, specifies Orano. Thus, the security Transport is managed by the French authorities up to the border.
“Arriving in Germany, the French police officers get off, replaced by the Germans who, in turn, sit in the four wagons provided for the police. The locomotives are also changed,” says German journalist Sibylle Kranich. Information that Orano cannot confirm, for “security reasons”.
In 2011…
The last nuclear convoy that left for Germany left its mark on memories. Opponents from all over France and Europe had settled in Yvetot-Bocage. For a whole day, they demonstrated and tried to prevent the nuclear convoy from leaving for Germany. At Pont Cochon, in the commune of Flottemanville-Bocage, demonstrators violently attacked the police. One of their logistics vehicles and electrical cabinets had been set on fire. Rails were also damaged. The convoy finally arrived in Germany after a record journey of more than 92 hours. In total, more than 1,300 people were arrested. Today, additional precautions have apparently been taken, although Orano does not confirm this information “for safety reasons”. In particular, the train will arrive directly at the site of the former Philippsburg power station, where the waste will be stored.
