Online ticketing: reserve your seats In an enchanted forest, reality mixes with dreams, illusion and the supernatural, as the paths and romantic intrigues of young Athenians, sylvan fairies… and a troupe cross of actors. Inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Fairy Queen draws from Shakespeare’s comedy the material for a magical and funny fable, which more than three hundred years after its creation continues to amaze. First performed in London in 1692, just three years before Purcell’s untimely death at the age of thirty-five, this semi-opera is the work of a young prodigy. There we find some of the most beautiful tunes ever composed by him – such as the very poignant “O let me weep” or the lively “Thrice happy lovers” – where his art of counterpoint and his sense of theater take their full measure. It is precisely this brilliance, this energy and this youth that this new production aims to show and hear. Led by William Christie and Paul Agnew, alongside choreographer Mourad Merzouki – who here signs his first collaboration for an opera – this Fairy Queen will be an opportunity to discover the new laureates of the Jardin des Voix, the academy for young singers of the Arts Flourishing. These eight soloists, selected from all over the world and who have already attracted the attention of the baroque world, will in turn embody all the characters of this joyful fable, alongside contemporary dancers from the Käfig company. Enough to foment a total lyrical experience, resolutely young and new, where the art of yesterday meets that of today for the greatest pleasure of the senses!
