Caribou protection: Quebec will have to consult the first nations

Andrei Audet | June 26, 2024

Quebec will have to set up consultations with the First Nations regarding the protection of the caribou, by September 30.

This is what the Superior Court ordered in a judgment rendered last Friday.

In February 2022, the Councils of Essipit and Mastheuiatsh took legal action against the government, claiming that it had failed in its duty to consult them for the protection of the caribou.

Judge Marie Cossette, behind the decision, believes that the rights of the First Nations have been violated and that the situation of the caribou is increasingly deteriorating.
