“It looked like a monster”: what are these strange noises heard during the power outage in Metz?

Many residents of Metz (Moselle) were awakened by a detonation before noticing a power cutthis Wednesday June 26, 2024 between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

This “explosion”-like sound was followed by a noise described as “scary” by some residents of the commune. But what was it about?

We asked the question to the UEM group, electricity and gas supplier in Metz.

A detonation linked to a circuit breaker on a high voltage connection

First of all, it is important to remember the origin of the power outage. In a press release, réséda (manager of electricity distribution networks in Metz) indicated that a internal failure on a 63,000 volt circuit breaker pole of one of the high voltage links supplied by the Pontiffroy station took place at 4:58 a.m.

The detonation heard by residents is linked to this circuit breaker. The UEM group points out that this is high voltage electricity, so detonation is completely normal.

He also believes that the sound of the detonation could have spread easily due to the calm which reigns at such an early hour.

A “scary” noise linked to high voltage electricity

But following this detonation, residents heard a strange noise.

“There was a regular noise, very loud, like a monster? “In any case, it was rather frightening,” Lilou, a resident of the Îles district of Metz, who recorded the sound in question, told us.

Other residents also immortalized this noise and transferred their recordings to Lorraine News.

But here too, the UEM group wants to be reassuring. No monsters lurk in Metz. This “scary” noise is completely normal following a detonation. It is especially linked to high voltage electricityaccording to the supplier.
