Bright and versatile fixed focal length for the Z mount

Nikon unveils its new bright fixed focal length for full-frame mirrorless cameras in Z mount: the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,4. This classic optic of the reportage is designed to excel in both photo and video. In addition to its performance, it is distinguished by a lightweight construction and a low price. Focus on its characteristics.

The first f/1.4 aperture lens in Z mount

After Canon and its RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM announced a few weeks ago, it is Nikon’s turn to present its latest versatile lens, the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,4. This fixed focal length appreciated by enthusiasts of reports and of street photography is primarily intended for full frame hybrids in the brand’s Z mount.

This is the first perspective opening to f/1,4 for Nikon mirrorless cameras. It’s almost a small event as the Japanese firm was reputed for its f/1.4 lenses from the SLR era.

It would then be easy to see in this Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.4 the distant descendant of the AF-S Nikkor 35 mm f/1.4G for SLR. However, this new 35 mm is not flanked by the letter “S” which characterizes the high-end optics (S-Line) of the Z mount.

In this register, Nikon already has the most premium Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,8 S. This second 35 mm therefore offers a affordable compromise without compromising on quality, according to Nikon. Note that the last roadmap to date suggested another high-end 35mm from the S series. Perhaps this Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 is simply inserted “as a bonus”, while waiting for a model opening at f/1.2?

Here is the list of technical characteristics of the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 :

Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4: a complete optical formula

The Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,4 is designed around 11 lenses divided into 9 groups. Let the same number of elements and groups as the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,8 S. However, the newcomer only embarks 2 aspherical lenses (compared to 3 for the f/1.8 version) and no ED glass. However, Nikon guarantees images very clear and detailed.

The manufacturer also specifies that the focus-breathing has been “eliminated”, which should delight videographers. The opening to f/1,4 is ensured by a 9-blade circular diaphragmpledge of a bokeh very soft, according to the firm. Note also the fairly short minimum focusing distance of 27 cm.

Autofocus Dual STM

For focusing, Nikon’s 35mm f/1.4 relies on a system with two stepper motors (Dual STM) which is found on many of the firm’s lenses. It is compatible with the AF algorithms integrated into the most recent Nikon bodies. The key, according to Nikon, is an AF fast, precise and regular, and as effective in photos as in video.

Size and weight content

For its Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4, Nikon has strived to keep the dimensions fairly limited. Indeed, with 74,5 mm of maximum diameter for 86,5 mm de longthis fixed focal length is barely more imposing than the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1,8 S. Its weight is 415 g and, here too, it is not much heavier than the f/1.8 model.

The lens also has 7 seals – and can thus resist dust and splashing water. Besides the focus ringit has a customizable control ring. Unfortunately, the latter only offers a ride that is still too smooth.

By surprise, Nikon is enriching its catalog with a new popular optic by amateurs. Thanks to his compact sizein large opening and above all its ” little pricethe Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 has everything to become a big success on the Z mount and quickly find his place in the Nikonists’ bags.
