ML2 Podcast (#9) – XXL interview with Esteban Salles: his beginnings in Tours, his long adventure in Grenoble, a special season in Concarneau…

After making his debut in Ligue 2 in Tours at the age of 20, Esteban Salles navigated among the different national championships with Trélissac Then the Herbaria. It is at Grenoble that he has gradually revealed himself as a more than reliable understudy to Brice Maubleu, but also as a goalkeeper capable of playing as number 1 for a second division club. It is not for nothing that theUS Concarneau decided to trust him to keep his cages during his very first season in the second tier of French football. Guest of the ninth episode of the ML2 podcast, he looked back on the multiple stages of his career up to this very special season with USC, as well as on his objectives for the future.

His first steps in Tours

« I have a special path, because I signed pro in June and I found myself starting for the start of the Ligue 2 championship at the beginning of August. A special first match because I got kicked out. I make an exit in the middle of the field where I have a complete hole and where I take a red card. I purge my match, I come back, I have one good match and two bad ones. The coach at the time told me that he didn’t want to burn me out and I came on as a substitute. It was a very complicated moment, I had to go through it to build my character. »

His departure at GF38

« Max Marty was sports director when I was at Tours. With the Herbiers, we went down to CFA and they told me that they were not going to be able to keep me because I had a fairly substantial salary and that they were going to change everything. Without a club and not wanting to go to the CFA either because I was going down from Ligue 2 to the National and I didn’t see myself going down level yet, contacts were made with Max Marty, they brought me to the essay […] Everything is going well, the coach was Philippe Hinschberger and apparently he was happy because he wanted a goalkeeper who made saves, and that’s what he saw on trial. »
