End of rights in Switzerland: return to less well-paid work

Reaching the end of your unemployment benefits in Switzerland does not prevent you from re-entering the job market. More than half of the people who have found themselves at the end of their rights since 2019 have even found work after a year, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) revealed this Monday. If we look after five years, this proportion rises to 66%. On average, 25,000 people per year have been affected by the end of their unemployment over the last five years.

45-64 year olds, people without training and foreigners are more likely to find themselves at the end of their rights, notes the OFS. The study also shows that the jobs found by these people are more often temporary, fixed-term or part-time commitments. In general, once employees go through the “end of rights” box, they earn less. According to OFS figures, the median hourly wage for these workers is 29.80 francs while it is 37.80 francs for all employees.

The difference is greater for executives, for whom we go from a median of 57.20 francs per hour to 43.20 francs. This gap is significantly smaller in the category of so-called “elementary” professions, where the median pay is 24.90 francs for those who have reached the end of their rights, compared to 26.20 francs for employees in general.
