At the call of agricultural unions, farmers are mobilizing throughout France to show their opposition to the free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, an economic alliance bringing together several South American countries.
In Meurthe-et-Moselle, actions are taking place this weekend with covered municipal signs and straw men, before a demonstration planned for Tuesday November 19 has Nancy.
Farmers in front of the prefecture of Meurthe-et-Moselle
To make their anger heard, farmers will go Tuesday in front of the prefecture of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Unlike the demonstration at the beginning of October where manure was poured in front of administrative buildings, the movement will be calmer.
“There will be no no procession in the streets with tractors. With a hundred farmers, we will gather from 1:30 p.m. in front of the prefecture rue Sainte-Catherine to demonstrate,” explains Jérémy Jenneson, president of the Departmental Federation of Farmers’ Unions (FDSEA).
During this gathering, farmers will cover the grids and tag their messages intended for the government. A strawman will also be erected. They will then be received by the prefect, Françoise Souliman.
No fires or blockages planned
If “fires of anger” will take place on several roundabouts this evening in France and particularly in Moselle, this will not be the case in Meurthe-et-Moselle : “We installed more than 20 straw men near major roads in the department. We are not going to burn them, because our objective is also to communicate by doing this.”
At this time, no blockages are planned and farmers' actions are not expected to cause disruption.
