The firefighters were alerted shortly before midnight for a collision which occurred at the intersection of Route de Castelsarrasin, also called departmental 958, and Rue Gaston-Bonnemort. This is an intersection where there is a traffic light with automatic radar, just a few meters from the village hall of Gasseras, a district in western Montalban.
A 56-year-old man in cardiorespiratory arrest
But the collision did indeed occur face-to-face, according to the first elements of the investigation, between two vehicles. One left the Montalban agglomeration in the direction of Montbeton, the other reached the city of Ingres. According to witnesses, both vehicles were heavily damaged.
In the accident, the most seriously injured was a 56-year-old man. When help arrived, he was in cardio-respiratory arrest. Witnesses, present on site, began a cardiac massage to try to restart his heart.
Witnesses begin resuscitation
Unfortunately, despite all the efforts made by the witnesses, the mobilized firefighters including a nurse, as well as the Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Structure (Smur) of the Montauban hospital, the victim could not be resuscitated. She died on the spot. The remains were taken care of by the funeral directors.
Five other victims, spread across the two cars involved, were more lightly injured. They were all transported by emergency services to the Montauban hospital center.
Traffic cut off
In total, sixteen firefighters were mobilized in seven different vehicles. This shows the importance of this collision. During their intervention, the national police secured the scene. She is also in charge of the investigation which will try to define everyone's responsibilities in this terrible accident.
The departmental council's on-call team finally went to the site to restore, once the cars had been removed by the tow trucks, the road which had to be completely closed to traffic for many minutes. Finally, it was able to be returned to the cars early Sunday, November 17 in the morning.
The elected representative of the town of Montauban also went to the scene to show his solidarity with the victims.
