A reaper, crosses, coffins, stretchers… So many symbols that the demonstrators displayed, this Saturday, November 16, 2024, to show “the death of fresh vegetables” that would result from the project to extend 20 ha of tomato greenhouses in Isigny-le-Buat, near Avranches, in the south of the Channel.
Although the prefecture has not granted the environmental authorization, nothing prevents the multinational AgroCare from submitting a new application. The activists of the Stop industrial tomatoes collective therefore continue their fight. “We are depriving farmers of these 20 hectares. Tomatoes all year round, it’s crazy”says Odile Marqué, a resident of the fields where the Dutchman Rik Van den Bosch (director of Maraîchers de Normandie, an AgroCare company) wants to expand his greenhouses. If the project were successful, the tomato mega-farm would be the largest producer in Europe.
