(Ottawa) Donald Trump’s decisive victory in the November 5 presidential election had the effect of an electric shock in Quebec. The majority of Quebecers say they are worried about the return of the wealthy businessman to the White House, according to an SOM survey conducted on behalf of The Press. Some even say they will stop traveling to the United States.

Trump’s election sows concern in Quebec
The concern is undeniable. Nearly three-quarters of respondents (71%) say they fear the impact that Donald Trump’s victory will have on Canada. Only 13% of respondents say they are indifferent to the outcome of the presidential election while 13% say they are confident that the impact will be positive.
Bad for Canada’s economy
Quebecers are particularly afraid that a new Trump administration will negatively affect Canada’s economy. No less than 70% of those surveyed say his election will have a negative effect and only 12% of respondents think the opposite, while 10% argue that it will have no impact.
Torn on the best leader against Trump
If the concern is great, opinions are quite divided as to which leader in the country would be best suited to deal with Donald Trump and his administration. The current Prime Minister is the choice of 31% of respondents while the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre is considered by 29% of Quebecers as the best to take on this challenge. Only 7% of Quebecers set their sights on Jagmeet Singh and 33% of respondents say they do not know or do not want to answer this question.
Quebecers would have elected Harris
If Quebecers had had their say during the presidential election, they would have voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate, Vice-President Kamala Harris, in a proportion of 69%. In total, 16% would have voted for Donald Trump and 7% of respondents would have supported another candidate.
Trump affects the image of the United States
Donald Trump’s return to power affects Quebecers’ perception of the United States. According to the survey, a little more than half of Quebecers now say they have a negative opinion of the world’s leading power. Only 12% say their opinion of the United States is more positive today than before November 5, while 29% say their opinion remains the same.
Fewer trips to the United States?
Will Quebecers change their travel habits in the United States following the results of the presidential election? Yes, say 29% of respondents. An equally large proportion of respondents (31%) say no or say they never travel to the United States (31%).
Methodology
The study was carried out online from November 8 to 11, 2024 with a sample of 1,176 Quebec adults registered with the SOM internet users panel. The results were weighted to reflect the main sociodemographic characteristics of Quebec adults. The maximum margin of error is +/-3.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
