As part of the improvement of living and working conditions at the Mbeubeuss landfill, the Project for the Promotion of Integrated Management and the Economy of Solid Waste in Senegal (PROMOGED) organized training on the actions of first relief ministers for the benefit of waste pickers, SONAGED and PROMOGED agents.

Launched by the State of Senegal with the support of international partners such as the World Bank, the French Development Agency and the European Investment Bank, PROMOGED is committed to a vast reform of solid waste management. Among its priorities: the resorption of the Mbeubeuss landfill, a most problematic emblematic site, located on the outskirts of Dakar. The objective is to reduce its environmental impact while reintegrating it into its natural environment through containment work and remodeling of the mountains of waste.

Alongside the work, emergency measures are being implemented to improve the health, safety and socio-economic conditions of those present on the site. Training in first aid is part of this approach. It aims to provide waste pickers and agents with essential skills to react quickly in the event of accidents, which are often frequent in an environment as risky as that of Mbeubeuss.

During four three-day sessions, 120 participants — including 88 waste pickers and 32 agents from SONAGED and PROMOGED — were trained. The beneficiaries now declare that they have mastered the techniques necessary to stabilize a victim and preserve their physical integrity while waiting for help to arrive.

This initiative is in addition to other training recently provided, particularly on hygiene, safety and health at work. It marks an important step in the transformation efforts of Mbeubeuss, which moves from a simple landfill to a more secure site, while promoting the skills and role of waste pickers, real players in the circular economy in Senegal.

With this project, PROMOGED aims to reconcile sustainable development, environmental protection and social inclusion.
