In Aude: a stele dedicated to the Righteous, near Carcassonne Cathedral, vandalized three months after its inauguration.
A stele dedicated to the “Righteous Among the Nations” of Aude was defaced near Carcassonne Cathedral. Discovered this Friday, November 15, this plaque, inaugurated three months ago, pays tribute to 28 people who protected Jews during the Second World War.
Martial Andrieu, author of the photo published on the Facebook page “Life in Carcassonne”denounced an act that he describes as “desecration”. In the image, the names of the Righteous of Aude are crossed out with a cross and accompanied by the word “No”. On the other hand, a sentence taken from the Talmud, “Whoever saves one life, saves the entire universe”, is surrounded and annotated with the word “Yes”.
Alerted, municipal police officers went to the site to observe the facts. The municipality of Carcassonne has had the stele cleaned and plans to file a complaint against X. The inscriptions have been erased, but this act of vandalism arouses strong emotion, especially at this time.
