The month of October, internationally dedicated to Alternative and Improved Communication (AAC), marks a significant step forward for inclusion within the canton of Neuchâtel. Thanks to the support of the Adult Support and Accommodation Service (SAHA) and under the leadership of the Cerebral association, an innovative initiative is taking shape: the installation of Assisted Language Boards (TLA) in various locations public, an ambitious project to improve the accessibility of communication for people living with a disability (PLH).
An inclusive initiative for all
The project, led by Delphine Hoarau and Ghislaine Merlin of the Les Perce-Neige Foundation, aims to install communication panels in public spaces. These TLAs, designed with pictograms and text, allow people with communication difficulties to make themselves understood and find their way more easily. But this initiative goes further: it also meets the needs of non-native speakers, tourists, and all those who wish to access information visually.
The TLA project: a concrete response to LInCa
Following the adoption in 2023 of the cantonal law on the inclusion and support of people living with disabilities (LInCa), the SAHA encouraged this type of project by launching a call for projects to promote inclusion in the canton. The Cerebral association thus took up the challenge in collaboration with the Association Isaac Suisse Romande, the Association Romande des Logopédistes Diplômés (ARLD), and the beneficiaries of the Les Perce-Neige Foundation. Together, they designed and produced the TLAs, ensuring adapted manufacturing with the Flexmedia workshop and local carpentry to guarantee easy access for all.
Public places mobilized for a more inclusive canton
The deployment of TLA has already won broad support from public and cultural stakeholders in the canton of Neuchâtel, with installations in several emblematic places:
- Passage Theater : installation of panels in different formats to guide visitors from the hall and ticket counters.
- Music Conservatory : TLA adapted to the courses and a reinforced welcome for visitors.
- Neuchâtel cinemas : staff training and installation of TLA in the halls and at the counters.
- Museums : easy reception with specific panels.
- Playgrounds : installation in public spaces of Val-de-Travers and Neuchâtel, to promote communication from a very young age.
An inclusive project that shines for 2024
With the theme “Rock AAC”, International AAC Month 2024 highlights the importance of inclusive communication. The TLA project is a major step forward for the canton, making public places more accessible and facilitating exchanges between everyone. A potential partnership is also being studied with the Neuchâtel Hospital to broaden access to these essential tools.
This initiative is a step towards a society where everyone can express themselves, be heard and participate fully. The Cerebral association and its partners are committed to “making communication vibrate” in Neuchâtel and hope to see this project grow to reach an even wider audience.
