“A part of the local economy gone up in smoke”: the Meuzac sawmill, in Haute-Vienne, destroyed in a fire

“I heard someone screaming, so I went out. That's when I saw a huge cloud of smoke and flames. » This Friday around 2 p.m., a violent fire broke out in the Eurl sawmill Meuzacois, in the town of Meuzac, south of . 500 m2 were destroyed by the flames, including the metal structure.

No injuries

One of the workers was still inside when the fire broke out. “He was in an office dealing with administrative documents when he smelled an odor. He just had time to get out and move his car away before everything caught fire,” explains the mayor of Meuzac, Guy Montet, who quickly went to the scene.

At 2:30 p.m., around thirty firefighters were dispatched to the scene from the Limoges, Magnac-Bourg and Saint-Germain-les-Belles barracks. Reinforcements also came from Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, Ambazac and Lubersac in Corrèze. Several lances are necessary to control the disaster.

If the origin of the fire, which did not cause any injuries, remains to be determined, security operations should last a good part of the evening and continue into the night, indicates Commander Sabourdy of SDIS 87.

“A heavy loss for the community”

“It’s a heavy loss for the town, a whole section of the local economy has gone up in smoke and three jobs,” laments Guy Montet. This sawmill has been present in our town since the 1960s. She provided services to businesses and individuals throughout the department. We are, and will be, present in the days to come to support them. »

Present, Senator Christian Redon-Sarrazy, former mayor of Meuzac, also gave his support to the manager and workers of the sawmill.

“I worked in this sawmill for several years. Seeing it burn breaks my heart. We have always known this company in Meuzac,” confides a resident among around ten local residents gathered next to the church.

This fire also brought back memories among residents. “When I heard the noise and saw the smoke, I said to myself: ‘oh no, it’s starting again’,” adds a Meuzacoise.

Seven years ago, a fire broke out in the premises of the Minerva Oil company, which specializes in the packaging of engine oil. The fire had caused significant damage, with the plume of smoke being visible nearly 40 km away. One person had died.
