A 49-year-old man from Estrie died of diabetes after being transferred from one resource to another for several weeks without receiving adequate care for his illness, according to the conclusions of the coroner Me Kathleen Gelinas.

In April 2022, the Melbourne resident was diagnosed with diabetes at Val-des-Sources Hospital. The first follow-up with a nurse is only carried out one month after the discovery of the disease, it is explained in the nine-page report made public Friday.

However, the man cannot receive his services in Val-des-Sources, since he lives in the territory of Val-Saint-François.

A waltz of speakers then begins, with several professionals from different establishments sharing this file, without providing complete care for the patient.

It also took several weeks before teaching the patient how to manage their diabetes. During this time, his health deteriorated.

“It is clear, however, that despite the individual will and dedication of these people, the long treatment times as well as administrative constraints largely contributed to the death. [du patient]», underlined Me Gélinas in his report.

“Rapid treatment and regular monitoring of diabetes would have made it possible to avoid a deterioration in the state of health. [du patient] and ultimately his death,” she said.

The coroner issued five recommendations to the Estrie Integrated University Health and Social Services Center (CIUSSS) following this death, including reviewing the coverage of care services and ensuring that there has tools available to effectively teach people who have diabetes about diabetes.

In writing, the CIUSSS indicated that it takes these recommendations seriously and will return to the coroner on its actions by July 17.
