More than $3.9 million in grants, business support services and revitalization of tourist attractions will help Jasper businesses recover from the economic impact of last summer’s wildfires
November 14, 2024 – Jasper (Alberta) – PrairiesCan
Residents and businesses in Jasper and Jasper National Park are working hard to recover from the devastating effects of this summer’s wildfires on the community and local economy. The Government of Canada is taking action to help Jasper rebuild its economy and emerge stronger and more resilient.
The Honorable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, on behalf of the Honorable Dan Vandal, Minister of PrairiesCan, today announced federal funding of more than $3.9 million to help Jasper small businesses get back on their feet.
Grants for small businesses
A total amount of $3.45 million will be invested to launch the Jasper Business Recovery Programa new grant initiative for small businesses located in Jasper. The program will provide non-repayable funding directly to businesses with 50 or fewer employees licensed in the Municipality of Jasper or Jasper National Park. Sole proprietors in the construction, tourism or events sectors will be able to receive up to $5,000, while incorporated businesses can receive up to $10,000. In addition to financing, the program also includes support and business development services. The program will be administered by the Community Futures West Yellowhead.
The Jasper Business Recovery Program was created after consultation with small businesses who were directly affected by the wildfires. It addresses the need for non-repayable financing for businesses so they can meet their financial obligations and directly address the reduction in revenue resulting from the closure of Jasper National Park during the summer season, when many Jasper businesses are the busiest. The program strengthens the ability of small businesses to maintain or restart operations while Jasper rebuilds for residents and welcomes visitors again.
This program is expected to help 325 small businesses, support more than 500 jobs and provide business services to 275 clients.
Revitalization of tourism
An additional $500,000 is allocated to Tourism Jasper to encourage visitors to return to Jasper, contributing to the community’s economic recovery. The funding will allow Tourism Jasper to market and offer programming, including light installations, ice sculptures, artistic performances, guided nature tours, culinary tastings and activities that highlight Indigenous culture. Activities will take place throughout the winter, spring and fall to attract visitors to downtown Jasper and increase traffic to local businesses. The funds will also be used to expand the Dark Sky Festival from 2025, in order to attract more visitors outside the high season.
