In Hillion, Stop the Green Tides challenges the effectiveness of toxic gas sensors

The closer you get to the seaside of Grandville beach in Hillion, the stronger the smell of green algae. Beyond the limits of the posts which delimit the prohibited access, it becomes difficult to breathe deeply. “Where is the progress? There are not any ! There has been green algae here for 54 years. This shows that there is no political will to put an end to green tides,” laments Yves-Marie Lelay, former president of the Halte aux tides vertes association.

“Here, everything is dead”

The decomposition of green algae releases hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas. “This Natura 2000 site is supposed to protect the habitats and species that live there. Here, everything is dead,” laments Yves-Marie Lelay.

The association is asking the ARS for an epidemiological study on the effects of this gas on personnel who have been collecting algae for years, and on the entire population who would find themselves exposed to this “low-intensity poisoning”.

“Poorly placed” sensors

Members of the Halte aux tides vertes association believe that the permanent Air Breizh sensor, installed at the entrance to the beach, does not reflect the reality of the pollution observed. “If the sensor was in the middle of the range, it would not be the same thing,” says Yves-Marie Lelay. They requested a study on the positioning of sensors to better measure gas levels, and proposed the installation of amphibious sensors. “We are also intervening so that the ARS gives an unfavorable opinion for the construction of a green algae storage area in Bon-Abri. This area would be concreted, which goes against coastal law. If this happens, our association will attack immediately. »

In addition to the requests for studies and these protests, the association is encountering internal problems. Due to a management conflict, there is currently no legal representative of this association in the eyes of the prefecture.
