Porrentruy prison (JU), regularly criticized for its conditions of detention, will be closed. This decision is inevitable, the Jura Government announced on Wednesday when presenting its 2026 prison strategy.

For the National Commission for the Prevention of Torture (CNPT), the conditions of detention there are illegal and degrading. In support of this observation, detainees who were incarcerated at Porrentruy prison filed requests for compensation.

The prison is located in a wing of the Porrentruy castle. The required improvements are often impossible to achieve in the current premises. The closure will take place after the integration of Moutier prison into Jura.

Moutier Prison

Another part of the prison strategy provides for the integration of the Moutier prison with 41 places. With that of Delémont, the authorities will have 55 places compared to 35 currently. However, the project to build a new establishment has not been abandoned.
