It's a solidarity operation long-term, which requires method and organization. At the beginning of July 2024, l’association Westport-Marigny-le-Lozon-Lyman (WMLLL) announced the renewal of the action of Christmas packages offered to Ukrainian children victims of the war led by the Russians. An information campaign for residents of this town in the Saint-Loise region then began to collect donations of money, games or toys, clothing, non-perishable confectionery, etc.

500 packets to prepare

After 320 packages shipped by truck at the end of 2023 for the young people of Lyman – a town of 20,000 inhabitants located on the front line, approximately 100 km from the border – the association is doing even better in 2024 with an achieved objective of 500 packages , well helped by the Rotary interclub of La Manche which is responsible for 200 of them, by the population and by the numerous partners.

According to President René Gautier, “the WMLLL association is entering its crucial period of preparing the packages which will be distributed to children in Lyman and surrounding towns in Donbass by the Westport (Connecticut) NGO Ukraine Aid International. As in 2023, they will be conditioned by the same teams in the premises of Ets DRAIE (Diffusion of industrial adhesive tapes) in the Chênée business area, free of charge from November 22 to 24.”

A typical package contains around ten products: clothes, books, toys and treats. ©Document sent to La Presse de la Manche

Departure of the convoy on December 7

The departure of the convoy is scheduled for Saturday December 7 at 3 p.m., Westport Square of Marigny-le-Lozon, where, like last year, the members of the office will welcome all donors and participants, but also all those who wish to help them discover this wonderful solidarity action.

Several people asked if they could still participate. Of course, as it is never too late to do well, they can drop off a donation at the town hall, deliver it or send it to one of the members of the association.

The future of the Ukrainian conflict being very uncertain, WMLLL is considering future similar action with jyoung Ukrainians living near Lviv, in the west of the country, less impacted by the fighting. Always with the same objective of putting a smile back “time to open a Christmas present from the other side of Europe”.
