There are many moments of joy at Les Chats d’Hébèc. Since the creation of the association fin 2021, in Théreval, near Saint-Lô, in Manche, 500 cats and kittens were saved from the streets, from a life of poverty and illness.
Sometimes treated, then placed in foster families – 19 in number today – Oscar, Ulysses, Kiara, Indie, Hulk and the others were then adopted.
Under the benevolent vigilance of the association's volunteers: “We ensure that the cat has found the right family, via a form and a first meeting,” says Josiane Sanson, founder and president of Chats d’Hébèc. If the feeling passes on both sides, we give our green light. »
Kitty, the English cat and Knacki, the dwarf cat
Some stories were particularly beautiful. Like the rescue of the English cat Kitty, lost by her masters during their stay in the department and who finally found them across the Channel, thanks to the association, a few months later.
Or like the incredible survival of the kitten Knacki, “the only survivor among her brothers and sisters and her mother”. Achievement of dwarfism, she is now being followed by a clinic in the Paris region and is living a happy life with her host family who have not managed to separate from her.
Other reasons for celebration: generous donations individuals and businesses. “We collected 13 carts of food and accessories during our last operation in a supermarket in Saint-Lô,” appreciates Josiane. And some companies, like Normandise, regularly deliver pallets of food. »
14 local town halls made aware of sterilization
Yet another satisfaction: the awareness-raising work with town halls, “which now have the duty to implement a sterilization and identification program for stray cats in their municipality”.
Approached by the association, 14 local town halls have established a partnership with 30 Million friends which finances half of the sums incurred for sterilization. Latest: that of Carantilly-les-Marais.
Cats in a desperate state, cruel abounds
There was, unfortunately, a lot of anger, sadness and outbursts.
As when the association was recently entrusted with a kitten rescued from a local recycling center: “Locked in a box, the poor animal was saved by a gentleman who heard meowing. » Baptized Cartoon, the latter was adopted.
Recently, Josiane and the volunteers were also deeply outraged by the story of a cat found in very, very bad condition, rue de La Roquette, in Saint-Lô. So injured and mistreated that it took theeuthanize, at the Saint-Roch clinic in Saint-Lô, a partner of the association.
“Everyone must be responsible for what they see in the street”
Of the acts of barbarity and mistreatment which revolt the founder of Chats d’Hébèc: “Everyone must be responsible for what they see in the street. If someone had come forward sooner, we might have been able to save him, that's non-help. »
Especially since the woman who found him “encountered several refusals of help before calling us,” Josiane Sanson is indignant.
Since last April, the association has taken charge 100 kittens, that she has had microchipped, sterilized and who are adopted or in the process of being adopted. But an association alone cannot do everything. Everyone has to do their part.
“It starts with having your cat sterilized, to avoid multiplication, abandonment, etc. » A process which is currently not obligatory unlike the identification of your pet.
