“It’s traumatic”: bullet holes in the window of a Mile-End business

At least three bullet holes were discovered in the window of a restaurant on Saint-Viateur Street, in Mile-End, Montreal, Wednesday morning.

Police officers from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) were called in the morning, but the projectiles were fired during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, according to the owner of the premises.

It is unknown what type of weapon was used to commit the crime, but it was powerful enough to leave three significant impacts on the window of the Falafel Yoni restaurant.

The owner of the place, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained to TVA Nouvelles that his restaurant is on a list of businesses to be boycotted due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This could therefore be a possible hate crime.

The man says he has nothing to do with this conflict, nor is he politically involved in this matter.

“We saw the holes in the window when we came home in the morning. We think it also happened at night and, yeah, it’s traumatic, he confides to TVA Nouvelles. Everyone who works here, that’s not something we want to see in our workplace.”

The SPVM recently arrested a suspect in connection with shots fired against a Jewish school in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district on November 12.

There has been a lot of tension in recent weeks and the SPVM felt the need to take stock at a press conference a few days ago to say that it is in close communication with representatives of the Jewish and Arab-Muslim communities.

As of June 17, 146 hate crimes and 104 hate incidents have been recorded.

Currently, 31 files have been submitted to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP).
