The senator from Gard, made aware by the Graulen fishermen and the mayor of Grau-du-Roi, sent a letter to the Minister Delegate to alert him about the economic situation of Mediterranean fisheries within the framework of the West Med Plan. According to our information, Fabrice Loher should go to Gard this Friday, November 15.
“Adopted in February 2019, the first West Med plan covering the period 2020-2024, has considerably impacted Graulen fishermen like all Mediterranean fishermen. This notably provided for a reduction in fishing effort of 40% between 2020 and 2024, the exit of the fleet of 14 vessels out of the 57 making up the fleet in the continental Mediterranean, as well as a limitation of fishing days and the establishment of no-fishing zones”, recalls Gard Senator Denis Bouad, in a letter sent Thursday, November 7 to the Minister Delegate in charge of the Sea and Fisheries.
“Ensuring economic viability”
“If the protection of fisheries resources is a major issue shared with stakeholders in the sector, it is also important to ensure the economic viability of Mediterranean fisheries,” defends the senator with Fabrice Loher. “Also, he continues, due to the restrictions linked to the first West Med plan, the economic health of these companies has deteriorated significantly in recent years.”
“Given also the improvement in the state of the resource, it seems important to me that the government adopts a position which will make it possible to preserve this economy within the framework of the ongoing negotiations within the European Union on the follow-up to give to the West Med Plan”, believes Denis Bouad who urges the minister to “take into account these important issues for our territory”.
According to our information, the Minister of the Sea Fabrice Loher is expected to go to Grau-du-Roi this Friday, November 15 in the afternoon.
