The Brussels-North police zone organized a commemoration ceremony in tribute to Thomas Monjoie, inspector killed two years ago during a knife attack, in order to recall the commitment to security in the North district.
A commemoration ceremony organized by the Brussels-North police zone (Schaerbeek/Evere/Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) took place on Sunday afternoon in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in honor of Thomas Monjoie , police inspector stabbed to death two years ago.
A first moment of contemplation reserved only for the deceased’s colleagues has already taken place in the morning. A minute of silence will be observed at 7:08 p.m., the time of the attack two years ago, and will be followed by another minute during which sirens will sound.
The first commemoration took place in front of the police station on rue du Brabant in the presence of representatives of all Brussels police zones, the acting public prosecutor of Brussels, Marie-Rose Brouckère, and the high commissioner Laurent Coucke, director- acting coordinator of the federal police in Brussels.
Thomas Monjoie, then aged 29, was attacked with a knife on November 10, 2022 shortly after 7:00 p.m. in rue d’Aerschot in Schaerbeek while he was on patrol with his colleague Jason P., who was seriously injured.
The author of the stabbings, Yassine M., 32, was placed under arrest warrant for murder and attempted murder in a terrorist context. The man, suffering from a mental disorder, had presented himself at a police station to announce that he intended to attack police officers; he had been taken to a hospital following contact with the police. prosecutor’s office, but left the waiting room shortly after without having seen a doctor.
Every day we move forward with determination, in memory of Thomas
“On November 10, 2022, two police officers were attacked simply because they were police officers”declared the head of the Brussels-North police zone, Olivier Slosse. “Violence against police officers is unacceptable. The safety of our police officers is essential and primordial. Without this, our women and men on the ground will not be able to carry out their mission in the service of the population. We will never stop working for the security of our neighborhood. Every day, we move forward with determination, in memory of Thomas.”
According to the three mayors of the area – Frédéric Nimal, acting mayor of Schaerbeek, Emir Kir, mayor of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and Ridouane Chahid, acting mayor of Evere – the northern district remains a point of priority attention, even two years after the attack. “Day after day, we work to improve security and living together”they said. “It is together that we will obtain the best results.”
“Two years after the attack on our police officers, the North district remains at the heart of our priorities”added Olivier Slosse. “We have strengthened the police presence, in particular thanks to the efforts of the staff of police station 5, but also thanks to solidarity within the area, to agents from other police stations and centralized units such as the BST (Transport Security Brigade , Editor’s note), the BTA (Support Team, Editor’s note) and the canine brigade.”
“We will continue to plan operations and intervene to improve security and community life on the territory of the police station”further assured the head of the zone. “But our police zone is not the only one looking for solutions for the Northern district. It has been identified as a regional ‘hotspot’ in the fight against drug trafficking and we work daily to improve security and living together with all the stakeholders involved who are active and present in the neighborhood.”
“I have good hope of seeing the neighborhood evolve favorably”concluded Olivier Slosse.
