In less than 24 hours, 40 skippers will set off from Les Sables-d'Olonne (Vendée) for a sea journey lasting just over 70 days for the fastest. The solo round-the-world trip is none other than the Vendée Globe and each time more and more people attend the departures. But what are the economic benefits for the city?

This is one of the sporting events at the end of the year. With the Vendée Globe, Les Sables-d'Olonne is transformed into the capital of sailing. The city made headlines 24 hours before the start of the race. Some spectators arrived this morning: “The atmosphere is quite peaceful, we settle down, we go visiting, we go discovering. We have just arrived”. An excitement that benefits the city’s businesses. The streets are busy. Everything has been done to attract people with activities in the city around sailing.

Families and groups of friends fill the hotels and restaurants. They are almost all full. An attendance that could break records, according to a family who has lived in Les Sables-d'Olonne for around fifty years: “We are used to being invaded in the summer. We had a certain habit here of welcoming people. This year is absolutely exceptional”says a family member.
