Mayotte, island and them on stage

By embodying the words of Mahorese women of different ages, conditions and temperaments, the three performers of the play “Elles avant nous” compose a unique, rich and subtle portrait of the island in the Indian Ocean. Refreshing encounter in “L'Oreille st hardie” with Nawoile, Anzmat, Anturia and Marie, the team of the play written by Leyla Claire Rabih.

First of all there is the force of testimony, the word alone, devoid of any artifice, any staged effect. The actresses Nawoile Said Moulidi, Sensor Soilihi et Anzmat Ahmadi stand on the stage and begin to interpret these female characters, which will follow one another throughout the show They before us.
More than characters, these are people that the three actresses embody as much as the words collected by the author of the play Leila Claire Raby is anchored in Mahorean reality.
Nawoile, Anzmat, Anturia et Marie Demesy – who continued to stage the show – present in the podcast The Ear is bold how they managed to convey the words of the women of Mayotte as accurately as possible:

These women, these Mahoraises, of different conditions and ages who told their stories to Leila Claire Rabythe author (and first director of this show before being called to other functions). They told about their lives on the island, their relationships with Mahorese society, with , with their parents, with love, with couples, with marriage, with the idea of having and raising children…

The testimonies follow one another, the portraits become more refined and we sometimes smile, we often learn, we try to understand what these evolving women feel. in a unique culture and society, in a French land but with religious and cultural traditions far from what exists in France…

The three performers of They before us have not lived the lives of those they embody but they have each seized this material and injected – a little – of what they themselves are and sometimes by proximity to the paths of their parents or their in relation to France, for example, they were able to bring even more finesse to their acting. The pure work of the actresses that they are, did the rest.
