The concern was already there, it has been reinforced since Thursday. On the evening of November 8, in Amsterdam, Israeli supporters of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were target of violence. In videos posted online, we see Israeli supporters literally beaten up. Shocking images, less than a week before the meeting between France and Israel in the League of Nations.
“We can’t not hold this match. Otherwise, that means we start to give up. This means that everything Israeli becomes suspect, that everything Jewish will therefore become proto-Israeli, and therefore a potential target. So to protect ourselves, we are going to be forbidden from moving around, from meeting, from having an event. Any concession on this subject is by definition unacceptable in a society which is governed by our principles”, estimates lawyer Patrick Klugman, guest on RTL.
“The match must take place, there is no no reason why it shouldn't happen“, adds political scientist Pascal Boniface. “We must take all precautions so that all spectators are protected, everyone must show responsibility, but if we canceled the match, it would be a failure. There is no question of canceling this match, which in addition would cause other problems. I think there will be a significant police force, but this match must take place,” he assures.
