Terraces on Peel Street: the marquees can be reinstalled

Merchants on Peel Street whose terraces had been closed in the middle of the Grand Prix weekend by the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM) will finally be able to reinstall their marquees.

The City of Montreal will allow merchants to install their terraces at a greater distance from their restaurant on public property by removing parking spaces on the street, ensuring that they will be able to respect the SIM requirements.

Measures will also be put in place to facilitate circulation in the sector, access to public transportation and the delivery of goods for businesses.

“The abrupt way in which the terraces were closed last Friday is unjustifiable and absolutely does not reflect the way we must support our merchants,” said Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante in a press release.

“This event must serve as an example never to be repeated,” she adds.

According to information collected by TVA Nouvelles, the distance between the marquees and the restaurants would have been 58 centimeters too short during the passage of the SIM, which would have caused the closure of the terraces.

An internal investigation launched by the City this week continues to try to determine what prompted inspectors to do this at this precise moment last Thursday and Friday.
