Starting in Seine-Maritime, Gilles Quénéhervé will cross the finish line in the Lozère prefecture on November 25. The current sub-prefect of Le Havre has just been appointed prefect of this department during the Council of Ministers on Wednesday November 6, 2024, on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau. He will thus succeed Philippe Castanet, as reported by our colleagues from Midi Libre.
At 58 years old, this servant of the State has already lived several lives. A high-level athlete, he was world vice-champion in the 200 meters in athletics in 1987 in Rome. Then bronze medalist in the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
A sporting discipline that he chose randomly during the baccalaureate exams: “I start for the 100 meters and the examiner tells me that there is a mistake, that he must have started the timer too late and that I have to start again. But on the second run, the time is the same , 11 seconds He had never seen that and what's more, it was the first time I had run in my life.” he told our colleagues from France Bleu Normandie, last August during the Paris Olympic Games.
Only 4 years later, he won Olympic bronze at the age of 22.
The sprinter then stopped his sporting career to later, at the age of 44, join the National School of Administration and become a high-ranking civil servant.
First appointed sub-prefect of Morlaix (Finistère) in 2017, he then became director of sports in December 2018, at the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sports.
Former secretary general of the Lot prefecture, he was then appointed sub-prefect of Le Havre, in July 2022, where he made an impact on local elected officials with his numerous field visits, according to the daily Paris Normandie.
However, he returned to running by carrying the Olympic flame during his visit to Le Havre before last summer.
