Lozère will soon have the largest solar park in Occitanie

The Roujanel plateau, in Lozère, is preparing to host the largest solar park in the region. With 125 megawatts of power, this installation by EDF Renewables will provide electricity to 80,000 residents while limiting CO₂ emissions.

The Roujanel plateau, northeast of Lozère, will soon host the most powerful solar park in the Occitanie region. Located in the municipalities of Prévéchés and Pied-de-Borne, this project, supported by EDF Renewables, will reach a power of 125 Megawatts. This is enough to provide electricity to 80,000 inhabitants per year, and it will avoid the emission of 41,120 tonnes of CO₂.

The Prefect of Lozère signed the authorization for the destruction of protected species last June, and no appeal was filed, as indicated by Radio Totem. This paves the way for this ambitious project.

The advantages of this solar park in Lozère

“Land availability and local acceptability, important criteria, made it possible to initiate this project. The interesting level of sunshine all year round, the topography of the study area marked by a slope of the land which does not exceed 15%, combined with a significant available space were determining factors for the location of this installation », indicated the report of the public inquiry, published in February 2023.

The project is outside protected areas and classified sites such as the Causses and Cévennes territory, on the UNESCO world heritage list, and the Cévennes national park. It received the support of the Mont Lozère community of communes as well as the communes of Prévéchés and Pied-de-Borne.

More than 240,000 solar panels

For this project, 241,800 photovoltaic panels of crystalline or thin film technology will be installed. To revitalize the abandoned land, the creation of a reclamation farm and the maintenance of the areas by sheep are also planned.

Construction work is expected to last between 12 and 18 months. The amount of investment planned for the construction of this solar park in Lozère is of the order of 100 million euros.
