Francis Boussion the mayor of Courdemanche (Sarthe) says it bluntly: “ I've had it up to here ! We can’t afford that.”
This disillusioned reaction is the consequence of a new theft suffered by his town on the night of November 2 to 3, 2024.
The fourth in less than a month in this small village in southern Sarthe.
The mayor of Courdemanche's rant against repeated thefts
This time, the thieves snatched the copper cables of four candelabras on rue de l’Etangsort in the middle of the night.
“It must have been between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Neighbors heard their dog barking », says the elected official.
Already, at the beginning of October 2024, the village had been the target of a similar flight around the Salle des Planches and the cemetery.
“We flew almost 250 m of copper wire on six candelabra. The thieves open the inspection hatches, cut the power cables and pull out the thumb-sized cables. And each time, they break everything,” the mayor laments at the cost of repairs.
More than 10,000 euros in damage
For this first flight, a quote was established by a local company. “There is something for 9 766 € TTC for the replacement of 240 m of wires. We don't have the means and insurance poorly reimburses this type of misdeed. This will be repaired in 2025,” announces Francis Boussion.
In the meantime, the affected routes will remain in the darknight came.
“And as the candelabras are mounted in series, if there are no longer the needles to pass the new cables, we could be forced to open the road . Can you imagine the cost? And we are not safe from it starting again,” laments the elected official.
Complaints filed
For these two thefts, the mayor went to file a complaint at the Grand-Lucé gendarmerie, the first time on October 11, 2024 and the second time, on November 4, 2024.
The day after this first copper theft, at the beginning of October 2024, the town was the victim of a act of vandalism in a community hall.
Rounds in the town
“They stole pool cues, the club’s cash fund and a small vacuum cleaner. And then, the next day, individuals attempted to enter a meeting room by breaking the lock and the door.
Enough is too much for the mayor of Courdemanche!
“I think that on the weekend, when I come home at night, I willa roundin the town to see if there is anything abnormal,” warns the mayor.
