Two lifeless bodies were found this Tuesday, November 5 off the coast of Calais in the English Channel, indicates the maritime prefecture in a press release.

The bodies were taken care of by the maritime gendarmerie and an investigation was opened by the Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor's office.

The remains deposited in Calais

The two bodies had been spotted earlier in the day by a ferry which then notified the Gris-Nez Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS).

The CROSS then diverted the public service patrol boat (PSP) Cormoran of the French Navy and engaged the boat of the maritime and port security platoon (PSMP) ESMP03 of the Calais maritime gendarmerie to carry out a search in the area.

“At the beginning of the afternoon, the Cormoran reported to the CROSS that it had located two bodies adrift,” specifies the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea in a press release consulted by BFM Grand Littoral.

“The two deceased people were picked up by the PSMP boat and placed at the dock in Calais,” conclude the authorities.

Attempted fatal crossings by migrants trying to reach the United Kingdom have increased in recent weeks in the Channel. 2024 is the deadliest year since the start of this phenomenon, with more than 60 deaths to date in attempted crossings.
