“Saving whales is not a crime.” Like other towns in , Luc-sur-Mer, a commune on the Côte de Nacre north of Caen (), supports environmental activist Paul Watson imprisoned since July 21 in Greenland.

Luc-sur-Mer is the city of whales

A logical decision for the seaside resort, whose emblem is the whale. “Luc-sur-Mer maintains a historical and symbolic link with whales, embodied by the famous skeleton washed up in 1885, which has become the emblem of our city,” explains the city in a press release.

“The importance of preserving whales”

In Luc, the skeleton of this whale has been preserved since 1938 in the town hall park, next to a small museum dedicated to it. “This reminds us of the majesty of these marine giants and the importance of preserving their existence,” continues the elf community.

Deeply committed to the defense of the oceans and endangered species, the City of Luc-sur-Mer stands alongside Paul Watson and calls for international mobilization to prevent this unjust extradition.

“Unjustly detained”

Paul Watson, tireless defender of the oceans, “is unjustly detained in Greenland, arrested last July at the request of Japanese justice. His crime? Having tirelessly protected the whales of the Antarctic sanctuary, saving thousands of marine lives threatened by hunting,” denounces Luc-sur-Mer.

At 73, Paul Watson faces extradition to Japan, where he faces a 15-year prison sentence, a fate that could cost him his life.

“While Japan continues its hunting actions, let us demand the immediate release of Paul Watson and fight together for the protection of our oceans and their giants,” concludes the Luc town hall.

The MEP from Caen met Paul Watson

A few days ago, MEP Emma Fourreau (La France insoumise) met Paul Watson, who has been in prison for more than 100 days in Greenland.

The place of environmental activists is not behind bars. Neither here in Greenland, nor in Japan. Paul Watson must be able to reunite with his family and continue his fight. May France grant him political asylum and French nationality.
