Sunday October 13 marked an important day for the young people of Ménilles (Eure), near Pacy-sur-Eure, with the election of members of the new Children's Municipal Council (CME). This election, which saw the participation of children in CM1 and CM2 classesresulted in the election of five representatives from each level with a participation rate of 50%.
All the candidates had prepared a profession of faith to convince their comrades to vote for them. Emilie Titlenthe school director, played a key role in organizing the event, surrounded by the entire teaching team. “Ménillonne, Émilie Cadeaun is fully invested in promoting the involvement of young people in the life of their community,” specifies Didier Courtatthe village mayor.
Heylene Mendes, Children's Mayor
The vote took place at the town hall, under conditions similar to official elections, with the installation of voting booths and a ballot box. The new municipal children's council was officially installed on Wednesday October 16, during a ceremony during which the mayor congratulated the elected officials and presented them with a tricolor scarf, a symbol of their commitment. The mayor of the CME, Heylene Mendeswill be surrounded by three deputies, Elian Laval, Emma Guérot and Mélia Zaghouami.
Didier Courtat sees in his CME “a fantastic way to motivate our youth to civic life and make them understand that city management can be complicated”.
Citizenship and ecology
The new CME recruits will quickly have work to do. The autumn promises to be full of events for the young advisors who will be involved in the inauguration of the new medical office, the development of the new housing in the Château's vegetable garden and the laying of the wreath during the commemoration of the Armistice from November 11.
Within the school, the young advisors will relay their actions, thus reinforcing the idea that democracy is also experienced in the classroom. They will be the voice of their classmates in decisions aimed at improving the quality of life within the school and the municipality of Ménilles. Among their flagship projects is a commitment to ecology, with the planting of trees on the Chemin des Grandes Vignes and at the school. The mayor believes that he has “the duty to transmit civic values to young people. Our village can be proud of its youth.”
