After an analysis of 43 million consultations of Wikipedia pages from 1,600 small towns in France, over two years, the Lab Nouvelles Marge publishes the results of its investigation.
Étretat in the lead
The top of the most popular small towns on the online encyclopedia is over-represented by small towns that are predominantly touristy.
“They represent 24 of the 30 best-ranked small towns, but also those which have benefited from a media or name effect. These cities receive relatively the most visits, recording an average of 57 visits per inhabitant over the period, almost nine times more than the average (6.4), i.e. more than 10 to 20% of the annual population. »
Here is the top 25:
Etretat (Seine-Maritime)
Cordes-sur-Ciel (Tarn)
Cauterets (Hautes-Pyrénées)
Saint-Lary-Soulan (Hautes-Pyrénées)
Mont-Dore (Puy-de-Dôme)
Sancerre (Expensive)
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Pyrénées-Atlantiques)
Castelnau-Magnoac (Hautes-Pyrénées)
La Roche-Bernard (Morbihan)
Lyons-la-Forêt (Eure)
Les Angles (Pyrénées-Orientales)

In the top 30 are two municipalities in Puy-de-Dôme: those of Mont-Dore and La Bourboule.
Mont-Dore, effect of name
Mont-Dore ranks 5th:
- Habitants : 1 292
- Number of visits to Wikipedia in 2 years: 101,146
- Visits/person: 78.3
- Average visits/day: 139
The reason? It is a winter sports resort. And the effect of the name “Mont-Dore” with the popular car race.
La Bourboule, spa resort
La Bourboule finished 15th:
- Habitants : 1 790
- Number of visits to Wikipedia in 2 years: 86,540
- Visits/person: 48.3
- Average visits/day: 119
Why such enthusiasm? For its spa.
A large part (80%) of these 30 small towns is made up of predominantly tourist towns, close to the coast, winter sports resorts or spas.
