The Toussaintit's this Friday, November 1, 2024. And with it, the tradition to come and bring flowers to the graves of the deceased. However, this is being prepared.
Florists and nurserymen have been hard at work for weeks to be able to respond to the requestin view of this specific day. Though…
Tradition evolves
With the passage of generations and the evolution of morals, All Saints' Day no longer prepared exactly as beforefrom the professional point of view.
The older generations had the habit of going to put flowers on all the graves of their loved ones. Today, this is much less the case; customers buy smaller lots. But the tradition has not been lost in the region, on the other hand, it has become more 'smoothed': people do not only flower for All Saints' Day, but on the preceding or following days. Often, they even do it throughout the year.
Chrysanthemums, timeless
Indeed, just a stone's throw from the nursery, many flowers already adorn graves in the middle of the paths of the cemeteryAunay-sur-Odon (Les Monts d'Aunay), in Calvados.
“It is also due to climate change », adds Éric Lehodey. “As it is cooler, the plants have a longer lifespan, so we can afford to leave them on a longer period. »
Another difference that he has noticed over the years: the colors. More lively and varied than ever. “People like to vary much more than before, and to make compositions. We see it a lot with chrysanthemums. »
Because if these are no longer the only flowers to come and color the cemeteries in November, they remain the stars of All Saints' Day.
“It’s in slight decreasebut we still have to be around 70 % sales. On the other hand, there are a lot of small flowers, the large-flowered chrysanthemums have almost disappeared,” explains Éric Lehodey, pointing to his “golden flowers”, which he has just released to put on sale since mid- october.
Which will soon be able in turn to pay homage to the deceased, whether they rest in a grave or at garden of memorya place reserved for the scattering of the ashes of those who have been cremated.
