Why Maromme is one of the ugliest towns in France

The Paysages de association published its ranking of “ugly France” on Monday, October 28, in which the town of Maromme, near (Seine-Maritime) is classified because of an advertising panel located on the banks of the Cailly.

This is a position that the town of Maromme would surely have done well without: that of being part of the “Ugly France 2024” list, published Monday October 28 by the Paysages de France association.

An original classification to say the least which is due to the location of a large advertising panel along du Cailly in the city center.

In Maromme, a town of more than 11,000 inhabitants located in the Cailly valley, the publication of this list does not seem to have caused much excitement. On the contrary, it was rather surprising given the number of advertising panels that dot the streets of the town.

Our streets are assailed by advertising billboards, whether public or private. I didn't really understand why the association chose this particular sign, there are some of the ugliest ones in the city“, laughs David Lamiray, mayor of Maromme.

The elected official recognizes, however, that the list has made it possible to highlight what he calls “visual pollution“.

Every day, more than 20,000 cars pass through our streets at 30 km/h, this is a real boon for advertisers who have chosen to put countless signs in our streets.

David Lamiray, mayor of Maromme

A situation that David Lamiray had wanted to change in 2014 by creating regulations around advertising before the metropolis of Rouen finally ended up taking charge of the matter.

If the mayor brings few credits to the Paysages de France list, he is however more vigilant about the consequences that the local intermunicipal advertising regulations (RLPI) adopted by the Rouen-Normandy metropolis in April 2024.

Thanks to this document, we will finally be able to harmonize advertising in our streets and have our say as mayor. For example, in the coming weeks, the advertising panel that we see in the ranking will disappear permanently.“, underlines David Lamiray, relieved.
