In the Lot, walnut producers are facing a poor harvest, which will inevitably drive up prices. Bad weather conditions are responsible, indicates “La Dépêche du Midi”.
In Périgord, nut producers, nuciculturists, are very worried: the 2024 harvest is poor. “There it is quite simply a massacre, the harvest is over, we have around 3 tonnes of nuts and we have made 10% of a normal harvest”, assures one of them, based in the Lot, has La Dépêche du Midi.
In particular: climatic conditions with frost in spring, excess water during winter, prolonged rains… The producer assures that many trees are weakened or suffering and that certain plots are no longer even viable , which will further affect production potential.
Good quality
The future therefore worries this professional: “We have experienced several successive difficult years, whether in terms of quantities or even prices, we no longer have the means to invest or replant new orchards”. And state aid would be far from sufficient since the compensation fund for agricultural calamities would be based on production histories: “Except that our histories have now been very bad for several years. There gone as it is, even insured people will not be entitled to anything.”
Small consolation: the nuts harvested this year would be of good quality. But prices should still rise for customers.
